Here stands Jack Kostelic, a.k.a. "Dogtown Jack", ie. the "famous" Jack sightings Jack, next to his hand built Kolb Firestar. Jack is also known as the Dogtown Potter, although he has since moved from Dogtown (Olema) here in California and is now in Idaho Falls. Aircraft sports folding wings, disk-brakes, 3-bladed carbon-fibre prop, Rotax 503, ballistic parachute and a custom paint scheme.
A photo from my first group flyout, shortly after I soloed. We've just landed at Schelville, a small airfield due east of Petaluma airport. I'm the fellow in the middle, my instructor is the 3rd guy from the right (your right). On this flight, I was flying the red Quicksilver (second plane from the left).
On one of our other excursions, Jack took this photo of me in a Quicksilver Sprint. This is the plane I soloed in. I was flying at my top speed of 40 kts IAS while Jack was wallowing in loose formation in his Kolb. I saw him advance the throttle lever and the Kolb simply sped away. Even if I dived, I couldn't go too much faster. As members of the Liberty Field Flyers, we were based at Liberty Field (go figure) on the northern boundary of Petaluma, right next to Highway 101. Alas, I don't have the time or the means to pursue this sport until later in life.
