A pair of Obelix (black one belongs to a friend)
The Obelix is an unusual flying wing designed in the U.K. by Chas Gardiner. The constant chord center section has a semi-symmetrical airfoil, while the tapered outboard panels transition from semi-symmetrical at the root, to fully symmetrical at the tip. The center section is set at an negative incidence angle with respect to the outboard wing panels. Inverted flight requires little if any elevator trim changes.
Here are some of the pieces which make up an
Obelix.
The "cut-away" view above is courtesy of the white
Obelix seen in the upper right corner. We were both coming out of
a high speed, down wind, formation loop when the aircraft tried to swap
positions. As you can see, my Obelix had a D-box wing structure with
open rib bays aft of the spar, while my friend's Obelix had a much more
durable, fully sheeted structure.
